How did it start?
The initiative came from Professor Ray Donnelly, FRCSE, retired thoracic surgeon and Founder and President of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. He was supported by Bro Ken Vance SJ and all the cancer charities on Merseyside. The first annual ecumenical service was held in 1999 in St Francis Xavier’s Church, Liverpool.

Charities involved were Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillan Cancer Relief, Merseyside Prostate Cancer Trust, Clatterbridge Cancer Research Trust, North West Cancer Research Fund, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Local hospices and hospitals now take a full part.

Services are now held in different parts of the UK and the Isle of Man. There has also been international interest and an annual service is held in Rome.
