Professor Ray Donnelly MBE FRCS is a retired thoracic surgeon. In 1990 he founded the Lung Cancer Fund which was later renamed the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and is its current President. He is a committed Christian and in 1999 he brought together many of the cancer charities in Merseyside for a day of prayer for those affected by cancer entitled Pause for Hope. With their help he has developed the initiative, the highlight of which is an annual service in one of Liverpool's two cathedrals. Services have been held in other parts of the UK and on the Isle of Man. He retired in 1998 and lives with his wife in Formby. They have five children and seven grandchildren. He is the author of: With Jesus to Calvary, reflections in verse on the Stations of the Cross with a Foreword by the Archbishop of Liverpool.
